GOLDFINCHES IN THE SUNFLOWERS WITH STORM, black backed lesser goldfinches, butterflies, dust storm, 20” x 16”, acrylic on canvas, 2015, exhibited at E.A.S.T., Nov. 2015.
This started as a color experiment. Using a close palette I used the porch support column to break into two versions of the palette.
I made some changes after it was exhibited in 2015.
I had never seen these birds before in Austin. I’ve lived here off and on since 1961. The goldfinches came when I let the sunflowers go to seed. I was too busy to pull them up. I saw the sparrows and house finches feeding on the seed pods so I left the plants to die gracefully.
Adding the the dust storm expanded the poem and challenged my skills.
